Like-for-like basin swaps start with the mounting type
A chipped, stained or dated basin lets the whole bathroom down, and replacing one is simpler than most people expect. Tradelink stocks above counter, inset, semi recessed, undermount and wall hung basins from quality brands, in shapes and sizes to suit the vanity or wall space you already have.
The key to an easy swap is matching your mounting type: an inset basin replaces an inset basin, an above counter bowl replaces an above counter bowl. Bring your old basin's measurements, or the vanity cutout size, and you're most of the way there. Ceramic remains the practical favourite for durability and easy cleaning, with stone-look options when you want something different.
How do I measure for a replacement basin?
For inset and undermount basins, measure the existing benchtop cutout, length and width. For above counter bowls, measure the old basin itself plus the tap hole position. Matching or slightly exceeding the cutout avoids benchtop repairs.
What do the different basin mounting types mean?
Above counter basins sit on top of the bench like a bowl. Inset basins drop into a cutout with a visible rim, undermount fix from below for a flush bench, semi recessed project from a slim cabinet, and wall hung basins fix straight to the wall with no vanity.
Do basins come with tap holes?
Some have one or three tap holes, others have none, which suits wall-mounted taps or a bench-mounted mixer beside the bowl. Check the product specs match the tapware you're planning to use before ordering both.
Which basin material is most durable?
Vitreous china and fireclay ceramic are the workhorses: hard, non-porous and easy to keep clean. Solid surface and stone composite basins look sharp and resist chips well, but prefer non-abrasive cleaning to keep their matte finish.
