Replacing a basin mixer, from standard height to highrise

If your basin tap drips, sticks or just looks tired, a new basin mixer is a satisfying fix: one visit from the plumber, and the basin looks new again. Tradelink stocks basin mixers from Raymor, Nero, Phoenix, Caroma and Fienza in every current finish, from classic chrome to matte black and brushed brass.

Standard basin mixers suit most one-hole basins and vanities. Going taller? Highrise also known as vessel or tall mixers pair with above counter bowls where the spout needs extra reach. Whichever you choose, stick to quality brands with local spare parts support, because a tap you use twenty times a day is no place for a no-name bargain.

Will a new basin mixer fit my existing basin?

If your basin has a single tap hole, almost any standard basin mixer will fit, as Australian tap holes are a standard size. Check spout reach lands over the bowl centre, and choose a highrise model for above counter basins.

What's the difference between a standard and highrise basin mixer?

Height. A standard mixer suits basins set into the benchtop, while a highrise or tall mixer clears the rim of an above counter bowl. Using a standard mixer with a tall bowl leaves too little clearance to wash your hands comfortably. These are also known as vessel or tall basin mixers, with the name varying by brand.

Which mixer finish is the most practical?

Chrome is the easiest to live with and the most affordable. Brushed finishes hide water spots better than gloss, while matte black shows soap marks more but wipes clean easily. All quality finishes last well with non-abrasive cleaning.

Can I install a basin mixer myself?

Tap replacement is generally licensed plumbing work in Australia, and flexible hose connections make it a quick job for a plumber. If a mixer is supplied with the basin or vanity, have it fitted during the same visit to save on call-out costs.
