12V towel rails: when low voltage suits and where the wiring goes

12 volt heated towel rails run on extra-low voltage through a transformer, a configuration some projects and specifiers prefer or regulations require for particular bathroom zones. The rail itself looks and performs like its 240V counterparts; the difference is entirely in the wiring arrangement behind the wall.

Tradelink's 12V range covers ladder and bar styles in current finishes. The transformer needs an accessible, dry location, which your electrician will plan during installation. If you don't have a reason to specify low voltage, the wider 240 volt range is the conventional pick; if your project does, this is the range certified for it.

How does a 12 volt heated towel rail work?

Mains power feeds a transformer that steps the supply down to 12 volts, and the low-voltage rail runs from there. The transformer mounts out of sight in a dry, ventilated, accessible spot.

Why choose 12V over 240V?

Mostly project specification: some regulations, designers and builders specify extra-low voltage for certain bathroom zones. Heating performance is comparable; the choice is about the electrical design so always confirm with your electrician.

Where does the transformer go?

Common locations are the ceiling or wall cavity, an adjoining cupboard or the vanity, provided it stays dry, ventilated and accessible for future service. Your electrician decides placement during the install.

Do 12V rails dry towels as well as 240V?

Yes. Equivalent models produce similar bar temperatures, so drying performance comes down to size and bar count rather than voltage. Choose the size for your towels as you would in the 240V range.
